Tenby lifeboat launches to injured container ship crewman

Sat Oct 25 08:44:20 CEST 2014 arnekiel

Tenby RNLI launched to rescue a container ship's 2nd mate who was injured in an accident last Tuesday. The Haydn Miller launched at 2:20pm after the 2nd mate of the 135m container ship 'ENDEAVOR' caught his hand in a door when it slammed shut on it in very rough seas 25 miles west south west of St Anne's Head. He suffered a deep cut to his hand. The ship was enroute from Liverpool to Bilbao in Spain. With no helicopter available and with the sea state makin it impossible for a lifeboat to get alongside in their current position, it was decided, upon speaking with Milford Haven Coastguard that the best course of action was for the ENDEAVOR to make best speed possible to the shelter of Freshwater East. Once launched, the lifeboat was soon on scene. The coxswain then had the difficult task of getting the lifeboat alongside the container ship in high winds and swell. This was soon accomplished and the casualty was taken aboard the lifeboat where he was assessed by the lifeboat crew before being taken back to Tenby where he was met by paramedics at Tenby Lifeboat Station before being taken to hospital.
