Kasbah freed from Main shore

Fri Feb 09 17:14:54 CET 2018 Timsen

The "Kasbah“, 2508 ts (EU-Nr.: 02326679), which had broken lose from its moorings at the Main shore near the water plant Lengfurt and drifted into the facility on Feb 7, was freed by an icebreaker which had been called in and was secured. The ship, loaded with 1800 tons of chrome ore, then resumed its voyage and berthed in Würzburg on Feb 8 at 5 p.m. Actually she was sailing towards Enns with 4,4 knots. It was found out that the suction and swell of a passing barge had caused the "Kasbah" to break lose. It was unclear if it was passing too fast. Then the frozen bollards caused the remining two ropes to slip off, so that the barge could drift 400 meters downstream. However, the worst could be averted as the barge could have plunged down over a dam of the water plant, but it drifted perpendicular to the Main because the turbines of the plant were still running and causing a suction, pushing the barge towards the shore. On Feb 7 divers surveyed the hull and propulsion and found no damage, so the ship could be released. Barge drifted into water plant

Wed Feb 07 11:15:48 CET 2018 Timsen

In the early morning of Feb 7, 2018, the "Kasbah“, 2508 ts (EU-Nr.: 02326679), broke lose from its moorings at the Main shore near the water plant Lengfurt and drifted into the facility. The ship, which was enroute from Kleinheubach to Enns at that time, had berthed for a night stop. At 4.15 a.m. the master remarked a bang, but thought that a passing ship was responsible for the noise, and kept on sleeping. Only at 5 a.m. he remarked that his ship had drifted into the water plant and allided with a wall. No he immediately alerted the fire rescue and police. Divers were called to investigate the hull for possible damage. The ship was banned from sailing for the time being.
