Repair of grounding damage completed

Mon Nov 05 22:01:21 CET 2012 Timsen

The "Kyeema Spirit" on Nov 5 was crossing the Baltic Sea bound for Rio de Janeiro with an ETA of Nov 24 on its first voyage after the BLRT Grupp’s Turku Repair Yard has successfully repaired the tanker after it ran aground near Aegna Island, near Tallinn. The tanker had arrived at the shipyard after the company won a competition set up by the customer to determine which shipyard was best placed to repair the vessel. Following the vessel’s arrival, the repair crew carried out preparation procedures including the removal and disposal of fuel, oils and bilge water, ready for repair work to begin. Damage from the storm was mainly caused to the engine room below the main engine and shaft line. The rooms below the main cargo pump section also suffered damage; as a result, the repair work was carried out in a number of stages. Back dry docking keel blocks also had to be removed and fixed in accordance with technology approved by the DNV inspection. Turku Repair Yard’s crew focused on maintaining the existing location of the mechanisms, which ultimately slowed down the execution of repair work. Overall, the shipyard specialists replaced 72 tonnes of metal, repaired all rooms damaged by water and performed a check on all main cargo pumps of the vessel.
