Clogged diesel filter caused accident
The allision of the "Eilun" with a bollard at the quay of the port of Wittdün upon Amrum on Sep 4 was caused by a clogged diesel filter which led to a failure of the port siee engine during docking maneuvers so that the ship ran into a bollard with three knots. After the investigation and the questioning of the crew by the water police the ship was allowed to resume traffic the same afternoon. The allision of the "Eilun" with the quay in Wittdün on Sep 4 at 10.55 a.m. injured on the whole 30 children. On board were 120 children between 9 and 11 years, many of them had to be cared for after the accident as they were shocked. The fire brigade was on scene with 50 men. 10 of the injured were transported to the mainland with a civil rescue helicopter from Niebuell and the SAR Seaking of the navy based in Heligoland. Five pupils and a teacher were taken to Wyk upon Foehr aboard the lifeboat "Vormann Leiss" for medical treatment. Many children had been thrown onto the deck due to the impact and suffered bruises. The allision happened with a speed of about three knots and was probably caused by a technical failure due to which the captain was unable to stop the ship when entering port. 28 injured in allision in Amrum
On Sep 4, 2012, the "Eilun" allided with the quay of the port of Wittdün upon Amrum. There were about 100 passengers aboard. 28 persons, among them several children, were injured. Rescue forces were on scene with doctos, police and fire brigade. Nine injured were taken to hospitals in Wyk upon Föhr and Niebüll on the Frisian mainland by a rescue helicopter from Niebüll and an SAR Seaking from Heligoland. The others were treated on scene. The accident was thought to have been caused by a technical malfunction. The ferry traffic to the surrounding islands and the mainland was not affected.
