Tue Sep 04 18:24:38 CEST 2012 Timsen

The allision of the "Eilun" with the quay in Wittdün on Sep 4 at 10.55 a.m. injured on the whole 30 children. On board were 120 children between 9 and 11 years, many of them had to be cared for after the accident as they were shocked. The fire brigade was on scene with 50 men. 10 of the injured were transported to the mainland with a civil rescue helicopter from Niebuell and the SAR Seaking of the navy based in Heligoland. Five pupils and a teacher were taken to Wyk upon Foehr aboard the lifeboat "Vormann Leiss" for medical treatment. Many children had been thrown onto the deck due to the impact and suffered bruises. The allision happened with a speed of about three knots and was probably caused by a technical failure due to which the captain was unable to stop the ship when entering port.
