Allision caused significant damage
The damage caused by the allision of the "Eiltank 9", 2031 dwt, in its allision with two floating piers on the Rhine at Speyer was estimated to be around 118.000 Euro on the whole. The damage to the communal pier was 100.000 Euro, the pier of the Viking company was 8.000 Euro, and the damage to the barge about 10.000-20.000 Euro. The investigations were continued on Jan 17. The master stated his ship had suffered a rudder failure, the marine police suspected a navigational mistake. First the tanker had hit one of the two piers for river cruise ship. When it backed out, it got the anchor chain of the second pier into the propeller and was disabled. The currents turned the ship around 180 degrees, and it drifted into the other pier. A bollard on the pier was pushed through the stern of the tanker so it was stuck. Two hours later, at 2.45 a.m., another barge sailing downstream allided with the "Eiltank 9" and struck its bow. At 10.35 a.m. the tanker could be freed and towed to the yard in Speyer. The tanker left the yard after repairs again on Jan 24 at 1.40 p.m. and remained stationary in an old river arm of the Rhine in pos. 49° 17.33' N 008° 26.24' E by Jan 27.
