Detention for serious shortcomings in Weipa
The 'Movers 3' was detained at Weipa on March 4, 2021. The vessel's engine had such serious problems that the authorities blocked it from coming into Weipa's inner harbour. Instead, it remained anchored at the outer harbour. The engine faults meant that the vessel was unable to be propelled, which is needed to produce potable water needed on board for showers, toilets and washing up. Potable water supplies on board ran out within a week, and local authorities were attempting to source a third party to load water on board. Surveyors from the classification society boarded the ship to examine the issues. They found that the vessel's freezers had broken down, forcing the crew to discard meat and other food. The chief cook had resigned and the remaining crew, who were a mix of Turkish and Jordanian nationals, have each been on the vessel for between three and six months. Also, the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) was still establishing the extent of potential labour breaches done towards the crew on board the vessel. As of April 7, the ship remained moored off Weipa in pos. 12° 44.96' N 141° 36.12' E.
