Barge taken to Zwijndrecht for repairs
The 'Hapi' left the port of Hans Weert after having been unloaded and stabilized on Oct 19 at 8.40 a.m., headed to Zwijndrecht. At 3 p.m. she was docked at the Shipyard Gebr. Kooiman BV for permanent repairs.
Barge threatened to sink at Hoofd Plate
In the evening of Oct 16, 2019, the KRNM lifeboat 'Zeemanshoop' was alerted to the 'Hapi', 1497 ts (EU-No.: 02315426), which was dented amidships and in danger of sinking off the Hoofd Plate while the crew was preparing for their weekly practice evening at the station in Breskens. They rushed to the incident site together with the lifeboat 'Uly' from the Westkapelle station. The 'Hapi' had started taking in water during the loading of sand in the fairway near the Hoofd Plate. Already while the 'Zeemanshoop' was underway towards the position, the crew of three had abandoned ship and were safely taken on board the nearby vessels 'Middelburg' and 'Vectura' which had wedged the barge trying to prevent its further sinking. The barge was submerged amidships. Once the 'Zeemanshoop' had arrived on scene, two men boarded one of the sand ships to assess the situation and to check the crew of the 'Hapi'. After it appeared that the situation was under control, the 'Zeemanshoop' returned to the station in Breskens. The ship was held afloat by pressing it against a sandbar. Multraship then started the salvage activities. The tugs 'Multratug 22', 'Multrasalvor 4' and 'Patrol', the crane ship 'No Limit', a salvage team and divers were deployed. The cargo of sand was unloaded and the leaking compartments were pumped out as much as possible. The holds were empted on Oct 17 around 1.30 a.m. The 'Hapi' was then guided to a safe berth in Hansweert under supervision of the 'Multrasalvor 4'. She was delivered back at 3.50 a.m. Dutch reports with photos: https://www.knrm.nl/nieuws/knrm-reddingstation-breskens/zandschip-zinkt-tijdens-het-laden-van-zand https://www.pzc.nl/zeeuws-vlaanderen/opvarenden-van-zandschip-gered-voor-kust-van-hoofdplaat~a985897d/?referrer=https://www.google.com/ https://www.omroepzeeland.nl/nieuws/115900/Geknakt-zandschip-naar-Hansweert-gesleept
