Ship had engine failure in Kiel Canal and ran into embankment

On Feb 2, 2020, at 3.15 p.m. the 'Ceres' suffered smoke developement and engine failure during the easstbound transit of the Kiel Canal enroute from Hamburg to Kaliningrad at canal km 51 near Breiholz. The ship was stopped by an emergency anchoring manoever, and the pilot reported a contact with the southern canal embankment. The SFK-tug 'Stein' (IMO: 9241243) was deployed from Kiel to assist. The canal was barred for ship traffic at the position of the 'Ceres'. After the arrival of the tug in the late afternoon the 'Ceres' started the escorted transit to Kiel at 5 p.m. where it arrived in the Scheer Oirt at 8.15 p.m. It was found out that an overheated wae generator was responsible for the incident. The vessel was allowed to continue its voyage after investigations on Feb 3 at 1.20 a.m. It berthed in Baltiysk Port on Feb 4 at 4 a.m.
