Tanker lost lifeboat with two men inside
The "Chemtrans Nova" lost an enclosed lifeboat with two people inside on Feb 6, 2019, at 6.30 p.m. about 75 miles SE of Delaware Bay east of Chincoteague, Virginia, in the Atlantic. The crew members, both engineers, were carrying out maintenance works in the lifeboat when it suddenly broke free and fell into the water. The US Coast Guard was called to assist. The USCG cutter "Reliance" by chance was nearby and rescued both men. One of them was picked up from the water, the other from the lifeboat. Both had sustained injures, including a lacerated stomach and a broken leg. A U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon airplane crew assisted by providing communication relay support over the long distance as an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched from Air Station Elizabeth City in North Carolina to medevac the men who were transferred to the Norfolk Sentara General Hospital. The tanker continued its voyage from Marcus Hook to the Bahamas five hours after the accident.
