Community service order for captain of sunken barge
On June 15, 2023, the captain of the 'Cardium' from Rilland has been given a community service order of 80 hours for his role in the sinking of the ship in March 2019, in which the 43-year-old mate was killed. The so-called criminal order from the Public Prosecution Service means that the case has been settled out of court. In determining the level of the sentence, the Public Prosecutor took into account, among other things, the personal circumstances of the suspect and the fact that it concerns an older case. The skipper has made a financial arrangement with the relatives of the deceased crew member. The ship has been repaired following the salvage weeks after the accident.
Aft section raised
On April 8 also the aft section of the "Cardium" was raised by the salvors Multraship and Hebo Maritiem on the Wester Scheldt off the Kaloot beach near Flushing East. Three sheerlegs raised the wreck aroudn 3 p.m. to the water surface. Then the removal of remaining cargo and the dewatering of the accomodation area started. pon completion the 85-meter-section was to be transported to the Sloehaven in Terneuzen. Salvage of foreship completed
In the afternoon of April 2, the "Hebo Lift 6", "Hebo Lift 7" and "Hebo Lift 8" of Hebo Maritime sailed from Hansweert jointly with the "Catharina 5" and "Hebo Elevator" 7" with the "Tjerk Hidde". Together with the sheerleg "Cormorant" of Multraship they will lift the remaining part of the Dutch flagged, self propelled barge "Cardium", 3236 ts (EU-No.: 02331956; CS: PI3402; MMSI:244670086), off Flushing with the combined lifting capacity of 1.400 tons. In preparation of the work, the "Cormorant", "Multrasalvor 4" of Multraship, "Echo" of Polderman and "Hebo Cat 15" of Hebo Maritime took on board required stores in the Scaldia Port. On Apr 1 a body was found after hoisting the foreship of the "Cardium" from a depth of 26 meters at the Europe Way South near Ritthem, who was later identified as the missing mate Ernesto Maquirato, 43. After the lifting, a search was carried out inside, and at 12.30 p.m. the body was recovered and taken onto a police boat. Before lifting the section, the ship had been sawn in two, the front part of 25 meters length has been raised in the afternoon by the sheerleg "Cormorant". It was then placed on the "Hebo-P33" and pulled to the DSV Schelde Port by the "Hebo Cat 15". It was to be cleaned at the Clean company in Werkendam.
