Ship stopped by emergency anchoring

Thu May 29 13:15:44 CEST 2014 Timsen

On May 28, 2014 at 11:15 p.m. the "Capella" suffered engine failure on the Elbe between the buoys 90 and 92 at Pagensand. The ship had left the Norderyard in Hamburg after a stay of one week bound for Ghent at 9 p.m. Two hours later the pilot reported engine trouble via VHF. The police boat "WS 2 - Bürgermeister Weichmann" was dispatched to assist. At 11:30 p.m. the "Capella" had to be stopped by an emergency anchoring manoever in the northern fairway after the engine finally conked out. The "Bürgermeister Weichmann" secured the ship. It was found out that a lubricating oil pipe at the main engine had broken. The oil escaped under high pressure and splashed against the engine. This caused an increase of the temperature so that the main engine shut down. Short past midnight the engine was cleaned and the damage fixed so that it could be started again. At 00.45 a.m. the vessel was allowed to proceed and has an ETA at Ghent as of May 30, 10 a.m.
