Ferry ran aground near Holmön

Tue Nov 12 09:20:42 CET 2024 Timsen

The 'Capella' ran aground on Nov 11, 2024, at 4.51 p.m. near Holmön in Norra Kvarken. The Sea Rescue Society rushed out to the scene as well as a pilot boat. A helicopter was also put on standby, but there was no need for help. There were seven people on board the ship - five passengers and two crew members -, which did not take in water and did not leak fuel. The weather was calm during the evening, but there was some fog. At 7.30 p.m. all passengers were evacuated to shore with the help of the Sea Rescue Society. The ferry was to be towed away on the morning of Nov 12 at daylight. The ferry 'Helena Elisabeth' was inserted on the route at 6 a.m. as a replacement. The accident commission will investigate what caused the ferry to run aground.

Ferry evacuated after engine failure

Sat Nov 09 21:32:23 CET 2019 Timsen

The 'Capella' suffered an engine failure on Nov 9, 2019, around 11 a.m. between Norrfjärden and Holmön in Kvarken north of Umeå, Initially there were reports of smoke development in the engine room which then turned out to be steam. Shortly afterwards it was announced that the engine was not working. The ship dropped anchor, and the four passengers were winched up by a helicopter. The two crew members remained on board, waiting for a tug in rough weather with wind speeds up to 20 meters per second. At 12.20 p.m., the Swedish Maritime Administration stated that the four passengers had been evacuated and taken ashore. The crew requested that helicopters come back and be standby for their safety, but the helicopter had to return to the base because of dense fog. At 2.20 p.m. a tug arrived and took the ferry in tow. It was berthed in Umeå at 8.45 p.m. All ferry departures to and from Holmön were cancelled until Nov 11. The ship returned from Umeå on March 18.
