Captain arrested after accidental death of two crew members
The police launched an investigation into the death of Ahmet Mohamed Hassan Youssef, aged 26, an Egyptian national, and Hosin Alothman, aged 23, a Syrian national, on May 13, 2020. Both were working on the 'Anakin' which was anchored in the port of Famagusta. The captain of the ship, Hassan Arnaout, was arrested and brought before the judge at the Famagusta Accident Court, on charges of causing the death of the sailors as a result of inattention and carelessness. The court was also ordered to have the suspect checked under a doctor's control. The two men died by an electric shock on the deck of the ship during regular maintenance of an electric cable of 380 kW, which fed the pressurized water engine. The police said that on the day of the incident, the cable fell on the shaft that turned the water motor propeller, was damaged and short-circuited. Hosin Alothman, who was doing the cleaning work when electric current came to the pressure gun, was electrocuted. Hosin Alothman was trying to save him but also suffered severe injuries. Both people died in the hospital. The captain had taken over the ship for the voyage from Lebanon to Spain eight months ago, with 15 crew members on board. The ship was anchored in the port since October 24, 2019, due to an engine failure. Five crew members, including an engineer, left the ship during that time.
