Oil spill during bunkering operation in Vladivostok

Wed Jan 11 11:55:40 CET 2017 Timsen

The "Rich Mighty" spilled oil at Vladivostok where the ship had berthed on Jan 7, 2017. The accident happened during bunkering operations after leakage of fuel on the main deck. Following a damage in the bunkering hose, about 50-60 liters of fuel poured onto the ice between the deck and the dock. The crew stopped the fuel transfer immediately and reported the accident to the local authorities. At the the site responded hazmat and environment teams, which monitored and assessed the water pollution. It was estimated that the oil spot covered an area of 1,200 sq m. The environment response teams started water cleansing and collected around 600 kg of oiled ice crumbs. The whole water pollution was eliminated. The ship left the port again on Jan 9, bound to Miyako as next port of call.
