The spill of alomst one ton heavy fuel oil by the "Geopotes 14“ in the Kiel Canal between the passing point Dückerswisch and Brunsbüttel in the morning of May 17, 2010, at 4 a.m., was caused by a steering vent which was faulty mounted at the shipyard in Gdynia where the ship was coming from at the time of the incident. After repairs were carried out in the canal port of Brunsbuettel the ship was allowed to proceed to Rotterdam in the afternoon of May 17 and is actually approaching the Dutch coast. Fire brigades of Rendsburg and Brunsbuettel meanwhile concentrated on the oil recovery at Dückerswisch as the remainder of the oil trace up to Brunsbuettel proved to be unrecoverable.
