Steering gear repaired
On Jan 29, the 'Valiant' has returned to service after having suffered steering trouble enroute from Poole on Jan 25 off the coast of Herm. Specialist engineers were called to rectify the steering gear and carry out further repairs on one of the schottels, which was part of the steering system. The ship left Guernsey at 9 a.m. and arrived in St Helier just after 1 p.m. the same day.
Freighter suffered rudder trouble
The 'Valiant' encountered steering problems during its voyage from Poole, where it had sailed at 5.40 p.m. towards the Channel Islands in the night of Jan 25, 2020, and the issue became exaggerated as it neared Herm on Jan 26. The tug 'Duke of Normandy', the pilot boat 'Golden Spur' from Guernsey and the iwork boat 'Sarnia' assisted the 'Valiant' into port in deteriorating weather conditions. A towing connection was established just outside Guernsey's port, and the 'Duke of Normandy' towed it safely into St. Peter Port at 2.36 p.m.
Crane snapped during loading operation
A part of an Alderney Harbour crane snapped while it was loading the "Valiant" with supplies at Braye Harbour on Aug 7, 2012, at about 09:00 a.m. The jib holding the hook snapped. No-one had been hurt and the situation was under control, with another crane having taken over the operation. A subsequent freight arrival to Guernsey would be delayed by about three hours as a result of the incident. The freight deliveries to Alderney were expected to be back on schedule by Aug 8.
