Ulm refloated after three weeks

Thu Feb 23 22:21:40 CET 2012 Timsen

Three weeks after its groundin on the Danube on Feb 1 the "Ulm" was refloated on Feb 22. The ship had carried a cargo of 1.151 tons coal. Plans to lighter the cargo aboard the "Tamara" failed due to the extreme cold and a damage at the dredger vessel "Uhu". Ice on the river made the work finally impossible when the river was closed from Feb 7 on. The Hungarian crew was supplied by the Shipping Authority Deggendorf and the Water Police. On Feb 22 lightering could start again, and the "Tamara" received so much cargo that the "Ulm" could be refloated. The ships then proceeded to Straubing where the ship was surveyed by divers.

Danube closed after grounding

Wed Feb 01 18:06:14 CET 2012 Timsen

On Feb 1, 2012, at 8 a.m. the "Ulm" ran aground on the Danube with a cargo of 1511 tons coal. The river was closed for traffic between 10.30 a.m. an 1 p.m. The ship was running downstream and was turned around by the current, getting stuck opposite of Sommersdorf in the Mariaposching community on the right shore. Another ship in vain tried to pull off the ship, before it was decided to lighter part of the cargo. In the meantime the river was reopened for traffic.
