Broken wire injured lock workers in Kiel
When the 'Themsestern' was about to unmoor from the locks of the Kiel Canal in Kiel-Holtenau on its way from Riga to Rotterdam on Nov 30, 2019, at 8.20 a.m., assisted by the tug 'Stein', a mooring wire broke and smashed the window of the leisure room of the mooring men on the lock. One of the watchmen inside suffered a shin injury when he was struck. Two of his colleagues had cut injuries from the splinters of the broken window. The injured were treated in hospital. At the time of mooring out, the vessel was under pilotage and assisted by tug 'Stein'. There were no injuries nor damages to the vessel's crew and the vessel. The Master halted the voyage in order to provide all necessary support and to cooperate with the investigation. The broken line was replaced immediately and the condition of the remaining mooring lines were checked with no noticeable abnormality or wear and tear identified. All mooring equipment were found to be in good condition. The 'Themsestern' was allowed to contuinue its voyage after investigations at noon and berthed at the Botlek Tank Terminal in Rotterdam on Dec 2 at 2 a.m.
