Taharoa Express reached Wellington

Thu Sep 08 10:53:21 CEST 2011 Timsen

The "Taharoa Express" arrived at Aotea Quay in Wellington in the morning of Sep 8, 2011 for repairs to its hull. It arrived after a voyage from Taharoa Terminal, south of Kawhia Harbour, with a split in its portside hull which required welding repairs. The problem was detected during the voyage from Lanshan. The ship is moored near to the Wellington Regional Stadium where contractors will carry out the hull repairs. Once repairs are completed, the "Taharoa Express" will return to the Taharoa Terminal to be loaded with ironsands. In June 2007 the Taharoa Express was involved in a potentially disastrous listing off the North Island's West Coast. None of the ship's 25 crew, managers, or anyone at Port Taharoa recognised the danger when the partly-loaded ship sailed into gale winds and eight-meter swells on June 21, 2007, with no means of stabilising itself or getting rid of the 18.6 tonnes of water in its holds. The incident happened after the crew ignored alarms activated by the excess free-water, created as the ironsand slurry settled as it was loaded. The water reached and shorted out the bilge, ballast and de-watering electrical systems through un-sealed holes cut during recent repairs. Largest-ever cargo ship in Wellington harbour with split in hull

Wed Sep 07 06:48:25 CEST 2011 arnekiel

The troubled Taharoa Express will be the largest-ever cargo vessel to berth at Wellington when it sails into Wellington Harbour tomorrow morning, Dominion Post reports. The 269-metres long ironsands carrier, which can carry 145,842 tonnes of cargo, is en route from Taharoa Terminal, south of Kawhia Harbour, to Wellington with a split in its portside hull. Wellington Harbourmaster Captain Mike Pryce said the split required welding repairs. The problem was detected earlier this week following a voyage from China.
