Fire on tank barge
On June 2, 2018, at 7.45 p.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Stolt Mosel", 2133 ts (EU No.: 02320501) sailing Rhine upstream at Assmannshausen. A compressor had caught fire at river kilometer 532.8. The ship, loaded with 1,500 tons of phosphoric acid, was able to reach a berth in Assmannshausen on its own. The federal highway 42 was blocked as a precaution. The fire brigades from Assmannshausen, Rüdesheim, Bingen, Oberwesel, St. Goarshausen and others were on site with more than 100 men. The Hessian forces launched a fire attack from land. The multipurpose ferry "RPL 5" docked at the starboard side of the tank m/v and supported the fire-fighting attack. The fire in the engine room could be extinguished quickly. Afterwards the ship was ventilated and accompanied by the "RPL 5" to an emergency berth in Bingen. From there it continued to Bingen with tug escort. After the examination by an expert, it was allowed to proceed on June 3 at daybreak ti Ladenburg, the port of destination where it berthed at the Reckitt Bencikser Productions to unload the cargo before returning to the Netherlands, where the damaged compressor can be replaced.
