Environmentalist alerted about high risk convoy underway to Klaipeda
On Mar 23, 2015, the Russian-flagged purse seiner "Marginella", 944 gt (IMO: 8725498), left the port of Cherbourg, where he was detained since 2007. The rundown ship was to be dismantled at Klaipeda. On Mar 24, the ship was off the coast of Normandy, between Caen (Calvados) and Le Havre (Seine-Maritime) under tow of the "Serval", on which 11 deficiencies were identified during an inspection conducted in January 2015 in the port of Gdynia. Environmentalists of Robin Hood regarded it as a high-risk convoy posing a potential environmental disaster with the nets, dozens of buoys, coils of rope, and other rot and floating accessories as well as asbestos, oils and toxic paints on board. In 2007 the "Marginella" suffered two engine room fires in the port of Cherbourg and remained docked for almost eight years since.
