Allision in Rostock

Sat Dec 21 12:45:24 CET 2024 Timsen

On Dec 20, 2024, at around 8:00 a.m., the 'Rix Explorer', en route from Odense, lided with the quay in Rostock during the docking maneuver. There were minor deformations on the sheet pile wall of the quay, and the bulbous bow of the ship was damaged. The water police Rostock launched an investigation. Human error by the Latvian captain in connection with the unfavourable wind conditions were probably the cause of the accident. The Ship Safety Department of the Federal Association of Transport, Postal Logistics and Telecommunications (BG Verkehr) was notified and issued a detention order until the ship's class was confirmed by the monitoring classification society. The Federal Bureau of Maritime Accident Investigation, the Warnemünde Traffic Control Center and the Rostock Port Authority were informed. The investigations were ongoing.

Engine breakdown off Cape Gris-Neu

Mon Jul 24 10:50:08 CEST 2017 Timsen

On July 23, 2017, at 06:00 a.m., the "Rover" notified the CROSS Gris-Nez about a total power loss and unability to manoever seven miles Southeast of Cape Gris-Nez, in the upstream channel of the Pas-de-Calais vessel separation zone. The ship was underway from Nador to Rotterdam with a cargo of clay. While the crew was trying to identify the cause of the damage, the CROSS in order to ensure safe navigation detoured ship traffic in the vicinitiy and issued navigational warnings. As a precaution, the Maritime Operations Center (COM) of the Maritime Prefecture of the English Channel and the North Sea in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin ordered the emergenvy tug "Abeille Languedoc" at 7.15 a.m., to proceed to the cargo ship. At approximately 08:50 a.m., the CROSS Gris-Nez gave permission to the "Rover" to drop anchor six miles from Cap Gris-Nez to carry out the repair work. The "Abeille Languedoc" arrived on scene at 09:15 a.m., ready to intervene if necessary. The "Rover" asked CROSS Gris-Nez for extensions to repair two times. Shortly after 2 p.m. the crew managed to finish the repairs, and the ship resumed the journey. But four miles off Cape Gris-Nez, it had to stop again. The CROSS Gris-Nez immediately authorized it to anchor and the COM Cherbourg sent an evaluation and intervention team on board made up of the chief engineer of the "Abeille Languedoc" and one inspector of the Ship Safety Center (CSN) of Boulogne. At 3.40 p.m. they were dropped off by a Dauphin helicopter of the Navy base in Le Touquet. Very quickly, the chief engineer of the "Abeille Languedoc" determined the origin of the breakdown was the quality of the propulsion fuel used. After a complete inspection of the ship, the "Rover" resumed the voyage to Rotterdam around 7 p.m. after, at 6:30 p.m., the Dauphin helicopter had hoisted the evaluation team. The "Rover" arrived at Rotterdam in the foremidday of July 24. She left the port of Rotterdam again on July 25 at 3 a.m., next being bound to Newhaven, ETA July 26, 4 a.m.
