Explosion in Antwerp
An explosion on board the "Clipper Sund" in the night of Sep 5, 2011, was caused by a leak through which some chemicals came into contact with each other in the port of Antwerp. The "Clipper Sund" was moored at the quay of the company LBC Tank Terminals. Three products including nitric acid, came into contact. This led to a chemical reaction that resulted in a violent explosion. The bright flash severely wounded a worker from the Philippines. He had to be resuscitated on site and later died of his injuries in hospital. The Antwerp Fire Rescue came with an expert team. An IGS Team (Hazardous Materials Incident) also responded jointly with the consultant for Hazardous Substances (AGS) of the province of Antwerp. The products were being analyzed to see how the leak could be closed and how the dangerous cocktail might be removed. The explosion did not threaten the ship's integrity as it happened on the deck of the tanker. Thus the ship suffered only little damage.
