Container fell from ship
The Portuguese Maritime safety office was notified that a container fell from the deck of the 'Maersk Launceston' onto the pier causing oil spills, while conducting cargo operations at the port of Buenaventura, in the morning of Sep 15, 2021. An investigation was launched. The 'Maersk Launceston' left the port again the same day.
Tanker captain released
The Polish captain of the 'Maersk Launceston' has been released from his arrest on Oct 30. The Greek authorities were continuing the investigation into the accident off Piraeus on Oct 27 and have requested that the vessel remains in the area as long as the investigation was ongoing. The ship's manager, JT Essberger, described the release of the Polish captain as temporary. He is charged with gross negligence in the collision, in which two crew members on the minesweeper 'Kallisto' were slightly injured. JT Essberger and the captain continued to offer their cooperation with investigators. The company continued to provide legal assistance to the captain. The container ship received only very slight damage in the collision and has been confirmed seaworthy. None of the crews on the two ships were under the influence of alcohol, tests showed.
Captain has time until Nov 11 to prepare his defense
The Polish captain of the 'Maersk Launceston' has been given until November 11 to prepare his defense to a prosecutor, being accused of causing an accident through negligence and violating international regulations for safety at sea. He has been granted temporary release and also an extension to prepare his defense, granted by a court in the port city of Piraeus on Oct 28. The HS 'Kallisto' was severely damaged and became a total loss. The Piraeus Port Authority has requested that the court give it three months to conduct its investigation and compile a case file that will include reports by experts and data from the Marine Traffic global tracking system that will provide details of the two ships’ movements at the time of the incident. The 'Maersk Launceston' will be allowed to continue its voyage after it has been inspected and was deemed seaworthy. As of Oct 29, it remained docked at the Piraeus Container Terminal SA.
