Cargo ship sank after collision with tanker
On Dec 21, 2024, the cargo m/v 'Kuala Mas' was in collision with the KM 'Maritim Khatulistiwa' in the waters of Kupang in the anchorage area of Tenau Port, Kupang At 02:30 a.m. WITA, the watch team of the KSOP Kupang received a report about the collision which occurred during a maneuvering process. It was suspected that strong currents had caused the 'Kuala Mas' to go adrift and collide with the 'Maritim Khatulistiwa'. The 'Kuala Mas' suffered a leak at the starboard side. At 05:20 a.m., the captain of the 'Kuala Mas' decided to ground the vessel near ASDP Bolok Pier in Kupang in pos. 10°13.110' S 123°30.413' E. At 06:30 a.m., a team from the KSOP Kupang arrived at the scene to evacuate the crew and secure the ship’s documents. However, the crew decided to continue efforts to save the vessel. At 08:02 a.m., the crew sent an evacuation request via VHF radio. At 08:08 a.m., the captain and all crew members decided to abandon the ship. At 08:12 a.m., the tug 'Putri Harbour' evacuated the 20 crew members and transferred them to the nearest pier at Polairud Pier. At 08:34 a.m. the 'Kuala Mas' was reported to have capsized and mostly submerged. Containers were floating in the water around the sinking site. Only a part of the port side foreship remained visible. The KSOP Kupang has coordinated with the shipping agency and Pertamina to anticipate potential marine pollution by deploying oil booms. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident and the necessary mitigation steps.
