Grounding in the Suez Canal

Sun May 30 13:01:43 CEST 2021 Timsen

During its Southbound transit of the Suez Canal the 'Maersk Emerald' suffered a mechanical malfunction and ran aground in the morning of May 28, 2021. The vessel was transiting the canal as part of a Southbound convoy and was number five in line, when it ran aground in the northern end of the canal. Four tugs were deployed by the SCA to refloat the ship. As it was transiting in the Northern end of the 'new' Suez Canal, where there are two lanes of traffic, impacts from the incident were minimal. The ship was taken to the Great Bitter Lake, where she was anchored in the afternoon for inspections and repairs. After the crew fixed the problem, the ship resumed the voyage from Tanger to Salalah at 5.30 p.m. with an ETA as of June 2. During the incident, some ships were diverted through a second lane created during an expansion of part of the canal completed in 2015.

Hanjin ships sold

Tue Dec 06 20:51:39 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Hanjin Europe", "Hanjin Harmony" and "Hanjin Africa/Maerks Emerald" were sold for $392 to an unknown buyer in Rotterdam on Dec 5, who was represented by the lawyer Carel van Lynden. They were owned by the Resolute Leasing on the Isle of Man, which had chartered them to Hanjin. The owner owed the German HSH Nordbank, which initiated the sell, on the whole $1,8 mrd. The ships had been moored off Scheveningen during the recent weeks.

Hanjin Africa unloaded in Hamburg

Tue Oct 11 13:54:20 CEST 2016 Timsen

On Oct 11 the "Hanjin Africa" berthed at the Euro Quay in Hamburg. The ship had on board 10.000 containers. It was enroute from Asia to Europe when the insolvency of Hanjin was declared and had to wait for weeks off the Suez Canal until being allowed to transit. On Oct 6 she unloaded some containers in Algericas and continued to Hamburg the following day. She will stay in port until Oct 14 and leave after bunkering and taking on supplies for 30 days to a yet unknown destination.
