Grounding near Fort William
On June 22, 2022, shortly after 8 a.m. the Tobermory RNLI was requested by the Stornoway Coastguard to assist the 'Liva Greta', which, en route from Rotterdam, had run aground in the Sound of Mull close to Drimnin on the Morvern peninsula with five people on board south of Bunavullin in pos. 56 36 13.2 N, 005 58 42 W, at 06.35 a.m. After arriving at the scene, the lifeboat stood by as the vessel managed to refloat on the rising tide and escorted it whilst it assessed any damage caused by the grounding. The ship's crew established that the vessel was taking on water via its forepeak at the bow although the pumps were coping with the water ingress. After discussions with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, for safety reasons the lifeboat was tasked to escort the vessel towards its destination port of Corpach, north of Fort William. Arrangements were made for the Oban RNLI lifeboat to take over the escort at the entrance to Loch Linnhe. However, just as Tobermory’s volunteer crew arrived, the Oban RNLI lifeboat was re-tasked to another incident in the area. The Tobermory RNLI lifeboat therefore continued to escort the 'Liva Greta' to Corpach and only returned to Tobermory at 9:30 p.m. after covering more than 90 nautical miles in a service lasting over 13 hours.
