Tug sank after getting entangled in anchor gear
The US Coast Guard reopened the waterway closure on the Mississippi River from mile marker 224.5 to mile marker 226 after the tug "Michelle Anne" sank near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on March 14, 2019. The tug had run onto the anchor chain of the "Iolcos Unity" which had anchored on Mississippi. The Coast Guard New Orleans watchstanders received a report at 11:00 a.m. of the "Michelle Anne", pushing one empty dry cargo barge with four crewmembers, sinking at Baton Rouge General Anchorage. The four crewmembers escaped to the barge and were recovered by a nearby tug. There were no reported injuries. The barge was recovered as well. A Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Baton Rouge incident management team confirmed an oil sheen in the water. There was a reported potential of 18,500 gallons of fuel aboard the tug. An unknown amount of oil has discharged into the river. Due to concerns over responder safety from dangerous river conditions the Coast Guard and OMI Environmental were managing the spill from shore. The river reached its seventh highest crest on record on March 11 near 44 feet, and remained at just under 44 feet. The river was flowing at more than double its normal rate for mid-March in Baton Rouge. Torrential rains farther north in recent weeks have been the main source of unusually high water. The General Anchorage remained closed. The cause of the incident was under investigation.
