Ships which caused Hong Kong major palm oil pollution identified

PIL’s container ship KOTA GANTENG and Japan’s Global Marine product tanker GLOBAL APPOLON identified as vessels involved in a collision, which led to a major pollution in Hong Kong waters, says South China Morning Post. According to AIS, collision took place at around 0500 ICT Aug 3, in position 22 07N 113 54E, some 20 nm southwest of Kowloon, Hong Kong. Tanker loaded with 9,000 tons of palm oil was breached, some 1,000 tons estimated to be spilled. Cleansing on Hong Kong and nearby islands beaches still under way, some 180 tons of palm oil stearin were collected by evening Aug 11. Container ship called Nansha and sailed to Singapore, on Aug 13 she left Singapore and as of Aug 14, was en route to Dar Es Salaam, while tanker remains at anchor near grounding site.
