Man fell into engine room
A Port Weller dry docks worker suffered life threatening injuries and has been airlifted to hospital following a fall of more than 30 feet inside the "English River". At about 1:30 p.m. on Mar 22, 2012, emergency responders were called to Seaway Marine & Industrial Inc. following reports of the man falling inside the engine room of the “English River”, which has been at the dry docks since December 2011 for repairs. The fall was more than 30 feet and paramedics and firefighters worked together to extricate him. The man fell inside the engine room of the ship, landing at the bottom of the stairwell. It was difficult for rescue workers to extricate him because of the narrow passageways inside. They needed the fire service’s expertise to get him out. Firefighters and paramedics then had to carry him up six flights of stairs in a rescue basket. Due to the seriousness of the man’s injuries, an air ambulance was called, with the initial landing spot being in a parking lot on Lakeshore Road. They decided the gravel in the parking lot would have resulted in too much dust being kicked up, and so the helicopter and victim were sent to Niagara District Airport in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The man was taken away at about 2:45 p.m. to be transported to hospital in Hamilton. The Ministry of Labour and Transport Canada are working with detectives to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
