FedNav fleet adding ballast treatment to ships

Thu Apr 16 08:22:06 CEST 2015 arnekiel

Canada’s FedNav Ltd. fleet of saltwater ships that visit Great Lakes ports is installing ballast-water treatment systems in 12 of its new ships now under construction. The announcement, made Wednesday, puts FedNav at the forefront of ballast-water treatment as federal and state regulations approach deadlines mandating systems that kill invasive species that often stowaway in ballast tanks. The U.S. Coast Guard has regulations in place requiring treatment systems on all new ships entering U.S. ports built since 2013, although exceptions have been made, and for existing ships starting with their first major overhauls in 2016. Many ship companies have asked for and received extensions from the Coast Guard deadline for new ships, however, claiming proven technology hasn’t been perfected to remove invasive species from ballast water. But Montreal-based FedNav is moving forward, installing the system on its next generation of oceangoing ships now being built in the Oshima shipyard in Japan.
