Tanker allided with bridge
The "Clio" allided with the Huey P. Long Bridge on the Mississippi in the afternoon of Feb 27, 2019, sailing northbound on the river. An antenna hit the underside of the bridge, located in Jefferson Parish, about 1:10 p.m. The unloaded tanker was headed for the International-Matex Tank Terminals in St. Rose. The Causeway Police shut down vehicle traffic in both directions on the bridge as a precaution at 1.30 p.m.. An initial inspection by the the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development did not reveal any damage. But the railroad companies needed to also inspect the bridge to make sure there was no damage Around 4 p.m. the bridge was reopened in both directions. The incident was a direct result of the high river level. The Mississippi River has recently become swollen by recent heavy rainfalls, particularly in the Ohio River Valley. The river was now above 15.5 feet and rising toward the 17-foot height that the levees in the New Orleans area are designed to handle.
