Grounding off Huelva
The ‘Captain J. Neofotistos‘ suffered an engine breakdown during the maneuver to enter the port of Huelva on Nov 11, 2020. The ship which was loaded with grain got out of the channel and got stuck with a list toport side. The Port Authority immediately intervened and deployed four tugs and a pilot boat to assist. The tugs managed to pull the ship off soon after, and it was berthed at the Mineral Quay on the Río de Huelva at 10.45 a.m. It had sailed from Rio Grande on Oct 26. Bulkcarrier assisted dismasted yacht with fuel
The French around-the-world sailor Stephane Le Diraison has been handed a vital lifeline of fuel from a passing tanker after the "Sinbad" lost her mast off the Australian coast. He was competing in the Vendee Globe non-stop solo around the world race when his yacht was dismasted inthe Southern Ocean on Dec 17, 2016. He was uninjured and managed to set up an improvised rig to limp in to Melbourne, more than 950 nautical miles away. But with limited manoeuvrability, he was in danger of being pushed away from the Australian mainland by strong northerly winds. On Dec 24, Le Diraison managed to hail down the "Captain J. Neofotistos" off the Victorian coast and was given 200 litres of fuel to enable him to get his stricken yacht to Melbourne. Because of the difference in size of the two vessels, the fuel canisters were transferred by rope line to Le Diraison's yacht. Le Diraison was expected to bring his 60-foot racer Sinbad into Melbourne on Dec 30. The yacht will be loaded onto a freighter and shipped back to France.
