Collision off Busan
The "Captain Vangelis L" collided with tanker on Busan road at around 2.20 p.m. on Feb 15, 2014. The bulker had entered the port of Busan en route from Qinhuangdao. The accident occurred at about 2:20 p.m. as the tanker was trying to come alongside the freighter. The tanker had planned to transfer 1,500 tons of oil. It suffered a hole of 20x30 centimeters in the fuel tank area at port side, with a substantial oil leak and was anchored on Busan roads and fenced off with booms. Emergency actions were taken to stop the oil spill but an oil slick about 800 meters wide was found formed on the water. The oil spill was stopped three hours later. Five Coast Guard cutters and two naval vessels were working to contain the damage but their efforts were hampered by high waves. Another oil slick some 200 meters wide was sighted moving northeast from the ships. The collision might have been caused by high waves. The Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries formed a special task force to oversee the containment efforts. The regional authorities have been asked to take all necessary measures to contain any environmental fallouts.
