Officer at the helm fell asleep when ship ran aground
The grounding of the "Riona" off Kasnäs in the Hitis archipelago on Dec 4, 2013, was caused by an officers fatigue. This was stated by the Safety Investigation Authority in its report regarding the accident. The "Riona" was sailing from Kemiö to Vyborg when she got stuck at the shopre. No one was injured in the accident, but the ship's ballast tanks had two leaks, According to the report, the officer has fallen asleep at the helm when the accident occurred. He was alone on the bridge and the alarm system was not turned on. It has also emerged that the officer worked four weeks in a row before the accident.
Grounding damage getting repaired
The "Riona" has been sent to the Western Ship Yards in Tykö (Teijo) for repairs on Dec 9, after the cargo consisting of 970 tons of feldspar were unloaded in the port of Fröjdböle in Kemiö the recent days. The ship suffered two dents at the port side of the bow and about a meter long cracks in the hull. The cracks caused that the vessel began to take on water in the ballast tank. The Parga Ronja Carrier Marine Ltd. estimated that the repairs would take approximately one week. Why the "Riona" ran aground on the way to Vyborg with a cargo from the Sibelcos factory in Fröjdböle was still unclear.
Riona refloated
The "Riona" after she ran aground south of Kasnäs in Kimitoön, was pulled off on Dec 5 and was heading to the nearest port Frojdbole for inspection. The ship's bow had been sitting so tightly stuck in the mud that it required assistance from the tug "Monica Forssell" to free the freighter. Coast Guard, the Rescue Department and the Armed Forces responded, the anti pollution vessel "Halli" was on scene. No oil spill was reported.
