Russian tug sank due to ice pressure, one man missing
On June 4, at around 8 p.m. the ‘Baikal’ overturned as the result of ice compression in the waters of the Yenisei Bay of the Kara Sea in the Krasnoyarsk region. Eight crew members were evacuated from board with the help of the icebreaker 'Vladivostok'. One man was reported missing. Rescue measures were being carried out at the sinking site. The Norilsk Transport Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the accident.
Disabled icebreaker towed through the ice
The main engine of the 'Pluton' failed in the Barents Sea in vicinity 75 23 24 N, 56 07 12 E off Severny Island on March 2, 2023. The damage to the power plant of the 'Pluton' turned out to be so serious that yard conditions were required, and it was impossible for the crew to carry out repairs. The salvage vessel 'Spasatel Karev' was mobilised to assist and towed the icebreaker to the port of Arkhangelsk in challenging ice conditions, accompanied by another icebreaker. On March 12, the vessels arrived at the mouth of the Northern Dvina and in the night of March 13 finally moored at the port of Archangelsk.
