Barge of Bryan in collision
On the Albert Canal at Herentals near the the railway bridge Herentals-Lier two barges had a head-on collision in the morning of Nov 13, 2018. One of the ships, the "Dandia", 1057 ts (EU-No.: 06001154), sank with only the wheelhouse protruding above the water. The crew was rescued. The other ship involved was the empty barge "Ari" being pushed by the "Bryan" 91 ts (EU-No.: 06105041; MMSI: 205476390), enroute from Liege to Genk. Ship traffic was no longer possible on the Albert Canal as the sunken barge was resting perpendicular to the fairway. On average, around 100 ships per day sail through the locks of the Albert Canal. Some ships may be able to sail along the Kempische channels which takes, however, considerable more time. In the afternoon ships could pass the accident site with caution under the supervision of the inspectors. The salvage of the wreck will probably take place next week, after the insurance companies have done their work. It was unclear to date whether the cargo would have to be lightered before. To contain any pollution, an oil boom was laid out around the wreck. It was not yet known whether the cargo with artificial fertilizer might cause environmental problems. Only the cabin of the vessel can still be seen above the water level. The sunken ship had on board a cargo of 600 tons fertilizer, which may cause pollution. It is possible that samples of the water would have to be taken. A nearby drinking water facility has already been informed of the incident. In Oelegem (Ranst), Water-Link has a production unit that extracts water from the canal for supplies in the Antwerp region.
