ALGOMA PROGRESS 6821999

Mon Jan 24 09:57:29 CET 2011 Timsen

The "Canadian Progress" became stuck in ice Jan 22, 2011, while passing through the Huron Cut. She ran aground above buoys 6 and 7 on the west side of the channel around 1 p.m. The CG vessel "Samuel Risley" headed to assist. About 1:15 p.m. the vessel was back in the channel with anchors down. By 2 p.m. the ice field was pushing it northeast with danger of running over her stern anchor. The crew did not want to start their engines in fear of striking the anchor with the propeller. The USCG cutter "Hollyhock" came to assist. the "Morro Bay" was upbound from the lower river. The "Risley" took pressure off the ship. By 2:30 the vessel was being pushed out the east side of the channel. "Hollyhock" arrived on scene about 2:55 p.m.; by this time the "Progress" was reaching critically low water at the stern. The icebreakers turned her pivoting on the stern to keep from backing over the anchor. About 4:30 p.m. she was back in the channel. The vessel was allowed to head downbound to Port Colborne.
