On Aug 15, 2023,at 11.40 a.m. the 'Zillarri' arrived at the Palmeira Quay in Sal with the 38 survivors and seven bodies recovered from a vessel which was found adrift about 150 miles northeast of the island of Sal. The minister Filomena Gonçalves arrived in Sal in the morning, accompanied by the president of the Institute of Legal Medicine, Ineida Sena, and the National Director of Health, Ângela Gome to watch the disembarkation of the survivors here along with a multidisciplinary team for the reception. Seven required greater care and were sent to the Ramiro Figueira Regional Hospital. The rest received primary care on the pier, where a structure was set up for this purpose. On Aug 14 at around 08:00 a.m. the MRCC Madrid had reported that the fishing vessel had found a boat 150 nautical miles from the Cape Verdes island of Sal, about 15 to 20 meters long with 48 people on board, two of whom were dead, and alerted the Cape Verde authorities. The pirogue style boat had left Fass Boye, on the Senegalese coast, on July 10 with 101 passengers on board, one man of Guinean nationality and 100 Senegaleses on board, including a 12-year-old child and three teenagers aged between 15 and 16 years old. Apart from the 38 survivors and the recovered bodies, the remainder of the migrants was feared to have perished during the crossing.
