Investigation into sinking to commence
Pieter Kramer, the owner of the 'Sylvia Mary', was now on the way to Great Britain to collect the crew. "What exactly happened last night, I don't know myself yet. I haven't been able to talk to the crew too much yet. They are all impressed by what happened. I hope to be able to talk to them today to find out exactly what happened. But I am especially relieved that I can still embrace them. The ship is at the bottom of the sea and it is not yet clear whether the ship will be salvaged at all," Kramer said. “Shortly after the accident happened, I received a phone call from one of the crew members. I was told the ship was sinking, but everything was very panicky. The call came after the crew had already safely hoisted themselves into the life raft. Fortunately, one of the phones was quickly taken away. The rest of the phones stayed on board.” On Feb 14 at around 6 p.m. LT the EPIRB was activated. The crew, meanwhile, had saved themselves by jumping into a life raft. “Fortunately, they are all healthy and well. On board were my sons Fokke and Hessel, a grandson and a Polish boy who has been sailing for us for a while,” Kramer said. The investigation into the cause of the shipwreck has now started and was still in its early stages. It is not yet clear how the accident could have happened. There is also no clarity yet about whether or not to salvage the ship.
Lifeboat took castaways to Newlyn
The lifeboat 'City of London III' from Sennen Cove launched on Feb 14 at 5.55 p.m with seven RNLI volunteers, under the command of Coxswain Ollie George and made best speed to the 'Sylvia Mary'. The HM Coastguard rescue helicopter was also tasked. The lifeboat arrived on scene around 6.12 p.m. The coxswain advised the four crew members of the fishing vessel to take to their liferaft as the fishing vessel was low in the water and clearly sinking. The lifeboat was unable to make a safe approach to the fishing vessel as her trawling beams were deployed. The RNLI volunteers launched the smaller Y boat and recovered the casualty’s four crew from the liferaft. Being wet and cold, the coxswain decided to take the casualties immediately to the safety of Newlyn Harbour for further assessment. Arriving at Newlyn at 7.05 p.m. the four casualties were handed over to HM Coastguard and the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea fishermen. The lifeboat then returned to Sennen Cove being recovered up the long slip around 9.00 p.m. and made ready for her next service.
