Fire on pusher tug

Wed Jan 09 19:18:32 CET 2019 Timsen

In the afternoon of Jan 9, 2019, the fire brigade South West Limburg was alerted after a fire broke out aboard the "Xander", 18 ts (EU-No.: 06004245), on the Albert Canal in Lummen. Witnesses suddenly remarked smoke development around the vessel. Forces of the Heusden fire station got on board quickly. Fortunately, the skipper was able to maneuver to the quay and secure the ship for the time being so they could get to the fire much easier. The skipper had meanwhile entered the engine room and tried to extinguish the fire. Apparently a cable from the fuel line was broken and set the engine on fire. Fortunately, only the top drive motor had started smouldering, and another engine remained largely intact though the damage was considerable. Due to the fire, the ship traffic on the Albert Canal was also stopped. Once the fire was under control, other vessels were allowed to pass with caution. The "Xander" was underway to Liège pushing barges with a cargo of cement. Dutch report with video: https://www.hln.be/regio/lummen/video-boot-vat-vuur-op-albertkanaal-in-lummen~a4720bde/
