Crew member arrested for possession of child pornography
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested the 31 year old crew member Akshay Somaroo aboard the 'World Explorer' for possession and importation of child pornography near Iqaluit, Nunavut. RCMP officers boarded the cruise ship in Frobisher Bay to assist Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada officers with what were described as routine customs examinations. While conducting these examinations, the crew member, who was from Mauritius, was searched by CBSA officers and was subsequently arrested after he was found to be in possession of child pornography. Somaroo did not enter a plea and was scheduled to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Sep 11, 2024. Cruise ship skipped calls due to storm
The "World Explorer" which left Hamburg on Sep 14, 2019, which left Hamburg on Sep 14 destined to Amrum, List und Heligoland with the intention of tendering the passengers ashore, skipped the calls in List and Amrum due to stormy weather and trouble with the stabilisators and could not tender in Heligoland. It diverted to Esbjerg where it berthed on Sep 16 at 9 a.m. Some passengers left the ship. One man was said to have been slightly injured when he fell out of his bunk in the swell of four meters. The ship berthed in Bremerhaven on Sep 17 at 8 a.m. before returning to Hamburg on Sep 18.
Start of first cruise delayed again
The delivery of the "World Explorer" was delayed another time due to trouble with the interior. The ship remained stationary in Viana do Castelo with its crew on board and was waiting for the delivery. The maiden voyage starting from Kiel on July 28, 2019, was cancelled and it was then scheduled to start in Bremerhaven on July 31, being bound to Reykjavik as final port. The calls at Gothenburg and Bergen were skipped. But also this scheme had meanwhile to be aborted. Passengers of the affected cruise were offered a refund of 75 %. The delivery was initially scheduled for May 2. Now it was hoped to have the ship ready on Aug 5. On April 6 it was christened at the yard in Porto by Carla Bruni.
