Barge threatened to sink on Danube
On Dec 20, 2017, around 8 p.m. the "Wiking", 1215 ts (EU-Nr.: 05501670 ),suffered severe water ingress on the Danube near Schallemmersdorf in the Schönbühel municipality, Melk district. Possibly the ship had run over a river dam and was breached. The fire brigades from Gossam, Emmersdorf/Danube, Schönbühel, Melk and Spielberg/Pielach were alerted and attended with mobile dewatering pumps. Work was complicated as the ship was lying near the river shore, where the equipment had to be transffered aboard with ladders and work boats. The cargo hold, filled with steel coils, was flooded about 30 centimeters high. Within two hours the fire brigades managed to stem the flooding. and patch the leak temporarily. Wheelhouse crushed in allision
On June 1, 2016, at 5.30 p.m. the "Wiking", 1215 ts (EU-No.: 05501670), allided with the suspension bridge in Passau on the Danube. The ship was sailing river downstream, and it was thought that the master did not notice the water level of 7,4 meters which was 2,9 meters above normal. The wheelhouse was crushed when the ship hit. The crew of three from the Ukraine, Serbia and Croatia was not injured and could berth the ship close to the bridge. The fire rescue was alerted, but could be stood down 30 minutes later as no pollutants were released or other dangers arose. The bridge was barred for traffic for half an hour for inspections.
