Sailings cancelled due to technical problems
Wightlink has cancelled some passenger sailings on Nov 20, 2012, due to a technical problems with the "Wight Ryder I". The cancelled sailings on the Ryde to Portsmouth FastCat service were the 10.10 a.m. and 11.10 a.m. run from Ryde and the 10.40 a.m. run from Portsmouth. The company was running a charter vessel, with a crossing time of about 25 minutes, on the 8.40 a.m. and 9.40 a.m. services from Portsmouth and the 9.10 a.m. service from Ryde. Additional sailings were also run at 10.15 a.m. from Portsmouth Harbour and 10.47 a.m. from Ryde Pier Head.
Power loss on Wight Ryder
In the early morning of Oct 6, 2012, the "Wight Ryder 1" lost power as it was leaving Portsmouth Harbour and hit a buoy. Passengers on board the catamaran had to return to port. It meant the vessel could not be steered and it struck the four-bar buoy in the approach to the harbour. The vessel turned around and off-loaded its passengers before engineers went on board to inspect the catamaran. Nobody was injured. Engineers carried out checks on the engines but it has not been established what caused it.
Man jumped over board
A man jumped overboard on the Portsmouth-bound crossing of the "Wight Ryder 1" on Sep 29, 2011, at 6.47 p.m. The man climbed over the railings on the ferry and plunged into the Solent as the vessel made its approach into Portsmouth. He was picked up by a passing yacht. A police launch was also deployed and led the yacht into The Camber in Old Portsmouth. The captain and crew of the ferry followed all emergency procedures.
