Barge got stuck under bridge
The "Wendy Dua", 1932 ts (EU-No.: 02205627), enroute from Emden to Zwartsluis to take on a cargo of construction material, allided with the Tafel Bridge between Noordhorn and Zuidhorn on the Van Starkenborgh canal in the morning of Oct 17, 2017, around 6.50 a.m. The bridge came down when the ship was approaching it with permission by the bridge keeper. After he was alerted by the master, he tried to lift it again, but it was too late. The bridge had only been completed in August. As long as the barge remained stuck underneath the bridge, ship traffic was stopped on the canal. Also road traffic over the bridge was stopped for an indefinite time and had to be diverted on the spot. At 11 a.m. the barge could be freed. Damage was significant and estimated to be between 20.000 and 100.000 Euro. The crew of four was not injured.
