Search for missing crew suspended

Fri Dec 07 12:37:05 CET 2012 Timsen

Turkey has suspended rescue operations to find the missing Ukrainian crew members from the "Volgobalt 199", the employee of the Consulate General of Ukraine in Istanbul informed on Dec 7. The weather conditions off the coast of Turkey remained difficult.

Search to be resumed with daylight

Wed Dec 05 09:55:00 CET 2012 Timsen

As of morning of Dec 5, five crew members from the "Volgo-Balt 199" were rescued alive and one recovered dead. Seven were considered to be missing. Still, it was not clear if all 5 rescued are alive, one of them probably died shortly after the rescue. The SAR operation was to be resumed with the daylight on Dec 5, though there was very small hope that more of the crew were still alive in the raging storm. There was little doubt the vessel sank in a very short time due to capsizing after cargo of coal shift. The ships of the Valship PE Company from Izmail, Ukraine, are said to be in poor condition, the crews are having regular problems with delayed and unpaid wages.

Lifeboat smashed during SAR operation - three dead, three missing

Tue Dec 04 21:21:47 CET 2012 Timsen

While SAR teams saved four members of the "Volgo Balt 199" recovered one body and were searching for seven other crewmen, one of the lifeboats, the "Kıyı Emniyeti-7", hit rocks, was smashed against the coast and and also sank, killing two of the rescuers. Three other rescue team members were also missing. A fisherman who was trying to help the sunken ship’s crew died too. The Turkish Coastguard had sent the "Kıyı Emniyeti-1", "Kıyı Emniyeti-3" and the tug "Kurtarma-4" to assist the distressed Crew of the coal carrier.
