Engine failure and allision at Harlingen
On March 12, 2020, around 9 a.m. the 'Vlieland' suffered a failure of both main engines and of radio communication shortly after leaving the port of Harlingen towards Vlieland. The ferry was disabled and went adrift in wind force 10. It allided with the quay, suffering a leak, and a considerable amount of water flowed into the ship. With the help of a tug and the lifeboat 'Wiecher' of the KNRM-station Harlingen, the ship was brought back to Harlingen at 9.30 a.m. and was moored at a floating jetty in the Willemshaven. The 70 passengers were dropped off and taken by bus to the terminal where they were picked up until the replacement ferry 'Midsland' was ready for departure at 1 p.m. The noon departures at 11:45 a.m. Vlieland-Harlingen) and 2 p.m. Harlingen-Vlieland were cancelled. The ferry company Doeksen contacts all booked passengers. The exact damage to the ship was yet unknown, and the 'Vlieland' has been taken out of the water so that the exact damage can be checked. The ship remained out of service indefinitely. She was drydocked at the Damen Shiprepair Yard in Harlingen at 2 p.m. Dutch report with photos: https://franekercourant.nl/artikel/1090572/update-foto-s-twee-motoren-ms-vlieland-uitgevallen-schip-keert-terug-naar-haven.html?harvest_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F https://www.omropfryslan.nl/nieuws/945074-veerboot-loopt-schade-op-onderweg-naar-vlieland https://www.lc.nl/friesland/harlingen/Update-Ms-Vlieland-raakt-kade-haven-Harlingen-onbekende-schade-25452034.html https://www.scannernet.nl/nieuws/actueel-nieuws-harlingen/veerboot-vlieland-in-problemen-op-waddenzee
