Collision on the Rhine

Wed Jun 08 10:37:53 CEST 2016 Timsen

The "Viking Mani" (EU-No.: 07002003;) sustained minor damage after being hit by a barge on June 3, 2016, around 4 a.m. The barge struck the aft port side around the second deck. The barge apparently had come lose. She struck the aft port side at the second deck 10-12 feet above the waterline. No one was injured, but four cabins, the 6th-3rd at the port side rear on deck 2 were damaged. Three had their windows knocked out or removed by interim repairs. The little French style balconies were crushed into the ship. Some interior walls at the point of impact were moved. Passengers in the affected cabins were relocated to different rooms because the ship wasn't sailing at full capacity. The ship which was the second day into the scheduled cruise, remained operable and was able to sail to Cologne on June 5 with a large rubber sheet covering the damage for additional inspections. At the quay the crew was met by the police for investigations. On June 6 the ship continued to Basel, ETA June 10. Viking has not yet said what the impact of this accident will have on the ship's next sailing but the "Viking Mani" will have to spend some time in dry dock for complete repairs and any guests impacted by this change will be notified directly by email.
