Repair in Linz

Fri Sep 16 13:49:18 CEST 2016 Timsen

On Sep 17 a pusher tug was expected in Erlangen to move the "Viking Freya" to the ÖSWAG repair yard in Linz the following day, after she has been relieased by the investigators. The cause of the accident will probably not be found out due to the severe damage to the crushed wheelhouse. The repairs costs will be some 100000 Euro.

Cruise ship removed from accident site

Mon Sep 12 13:37:07 CEST 2016 Timsen

On Sep 12 the Main-Danube-Canal could be reopened for ship traffic after the "Viking Freya“ was removed from the accident site and taken to a nearby anchorage for further investigations. The work was complicated as the ship had shifted during the attempts of the fire brigade to remove the debris of the wheelhouse with a crane. After the work was completed, the ship, which had first hit a railway bridge with six knots on Sep 11 at 1.30 a.m. and then smashed into the railway bridge which was spanning the canal in a distance of 20 meters to the first bridge, was pulled out. The ship was moored at the nearby Kriegenbrunn lock, before being taken to ÖSWAG in Linz for repairs once the investigations have been concluded.
