Yacht grounded on Bramble Bank

On Sep 17, 2018, the "Olympuas Tigress" grounded on a the Bramble Banks at the entrance to Southampton Water, in strong winds and choppy seas, and led to Cowes lifeboat playing an uncomfortable waiting game for some two hours, before being joined by Yarmouth lifeboat. The yacht, with two people aboard,was hard aground. Although the RNLI’s Atlantic 85 rib "Sheena Louise" lost little time in crossing the Solent, after launching at 1.50 p.m., it soon became apparent that the crew would have to wait a long time for the tide to rise sufficiently for the yacht to float free. During the long wait it was decided that it would be prudent for Yarmouth’s all-weather more powerful lifeboat to provide on-the-scene backup. Finally, at 4 p.m. a crew member the yacht radioed to say they had regained full buoyancy. The long-awaited tow could then be carried out. Initially the yacht was towed off the bank by Cowes lifeboat, then the task was taken over by the Yarmouth lifeboat which delivered the yacht to Cowes Yacht Haven where its hull could be inspected for possible damage. Yacht towed to Crosshaven after mast broke during Fastnet Race

The Courtmacsherry RNLI all weather lifeboat was called out on Aug 9, 2017, at 3.21 a.m. to go to the immediate aid of the "Olympias Tigress" that sought assistance 13 miles off the Galley Head in West Cork. The yacht with 10 persons on board was participating in the Fastnet Race and was disabled with a broken mast. The Courtmacsherry Lifeboat under coxswain Sean O’Farrell plus a crew of seven volunteers launched immediately and in the pitch of darkness located the stricken yacht at 4.45 a.m. Once on the scene, the lifeboat assessed the difficulties with the causality and the immediate task was to secure a towline to the towering yacht in order to stabilise the boat. It was then towed back at a slow speed to the safe haven of the Courtmacsherry inner harbour. All 10 crew of the racing yacht were reported to be good condition, and both the lifeboat and yacht arrived to the inner harbour at Courtmacsherry just after 8 a.m. after a three-hour tow from the causality site 13 miles east of the Galley Head in north west winds of force three to four. The yacht was participating in the Fastnet Race and was one of a whole fleet of yachts that approached the turn at the Fastnet Rock during the night.
